Sounds GOOD: Download ‘Truth’ by Yalls
Yalls (aka Dan Casey) is nothing if not prolific. Whether he’s making beats for lo-fi rapper Mondre M.A.N., remixing garage-pop stars Sonny and the Sunsets, or releasing his own tracks under aliases like Steezy Ray Vibes (a project that The Fader recently premiered to great acclaim), the man stays busy.  Sounds GOOD is thrilled to debut Yalls’s “Truth,” a brand-new track Casey calls “a continuation of my recent exploration of dark vibes, vocal sampling, and buttery synths.”

Named for a piece in Galway Kinnell’s Book of Nightmares, Some Ember’s debut LP Hotel of Lost Light is the culmination of a lifetime’s experience for Dylan Travis; the man behind the moniker, he is a longtime musician and most recently a member in good standing of the Bay Area music community. Some Ember began dramatically. Laid up for weeks after a car accident and loaded up with a little compensation money, Travis “blew it all on synthesizers and production software”. In the past he and various bands he played with relied on studio engineers, but he was determined to learn and use that process for himself. Though Travis describes making Hotel of Lost Light as a very intuitive process, refracting his experience with post-punk and noise pop through a more minimalist, no-wave sensibility, recording and producing it eventually drew on every technique and technology that getting hit by a car had gained for him. Appropriately enough, this is a very personal album for him; seeking catharsis in his experience of music, Travis brings his vocals to the fore, underscoring a vividly offered shared experience in their naked emotion and the darkly evocative imagery of the album. His prowess as a producer only improves the experience as subtle nuance emerges in how instruments and vocals set distinct paces or the sound of unconventional warps and effects - whether vocal distortion or sega-synths - as they come into focus.
Dylan sums it all up best himself…“…the point of this record is to explore emotional territory that is perhaps uncomfortable, but to make that process a positive and constructive one. It’s about finding strength and solace even in the midst of loneliness, sadness, jealousy, or anger, things we all go through.”

Nice words from Hunter at Gold Robot about the new instrumental tracks I recently dropped. Will be playing them at Easy Bay night for sure.
goldrobot:

The ever-busy Yalls dropped a couple instrumental tracks on the masses last week which add to the library of proof that this is one talented artist.  Those of us in the Bay Area have been lucky enough to see these live, and I’m hoping he plays them at the upcoming Easy Bay show on Wednesday (4/11) presented by Mapzzz and Decoder at Era in Oakland.  Stream and download the aforementioned tracks below, and purchase his limited edition Fantasy 7” while you’re at it.

Yalls - “Grand Entrance”

“It’s basically a tear it up pizza anthem for our generation.” - @yallsmusic

This fresh instrumental beat from Berkeley’s Dan Casey (a.k.a. Yalls) has been making the rounds since he posted it to his SoundCloud on Monday night, and rightly so. I had the pleasure of being introduced to this track in the flesh during his headline performance at Milk Bar SF on Saturday night, which was one of the best I’ve seen from the local legend.

Everyone was vibin’ hard to the build up, but it wasn’t until the orgasmic drop at the two-minute mark that asses really hit the floor. Originally intended as a wild hip-hop beat, this banger definitely stands on its own. Stacked with high-pitched samples and future-funk hooks, “Grand Entrance” is not be fucked with. In fact, Dan will probably kick you out of the club if you try rapping in his face. You can ride the vibe, just don’t kill it.

And as if one bangin’ beat wasn’t enough, Yalls dropped another one late last night. Enjoy.

Yalls Grand Entrance

Crafting pulsating heart thumps and soul scattered soundscapes, Yalls comes in with the clutch one more time. A modern love song for the electronic soul is the latest creation by Berkeley’s Yalls. Not going to lie I have had this song for a few months now, and every time I hear it, I go to my library and have to double check who the artist is, because it’s so fucking wild and just blows me away. It’s a messy, lovsick, tripping over your own feet ballad for the moment when you realize you’ve fallen hard. “Grand Entrance” is every emotion you experience while under the spell that is love, summed up in just under four minutes. From glitchy heartache to smoothed out infatuated bliss, Yalls hits on every subtly of cupid’s touch in this gem.

This is one of my favorite Yalls tracks as it exhibits so much versatility as far as his work as a producer is concerned. This is a solid stand alone track, but could just as easily be the foundation for some of indie’s hottest rappers to lay down some lyrics. Oh and those high notes are the sound the butterflies in your stomach make.

Grand Entrance is a fun lil’ freebie that you can DOWNLOAD for free HERE.

The Sacramento Electronic Music Festival is slated to take place May 3-5th and two of our favorite acts will be playing.  Yalls and James & Evander will be playing sets, keep an eye on the festival website for date, location, and ticket information.  Really love these smaller, focused festivals; this one is sure to introduce some new artists to the region.
